Designing with the Atlas: Where Slow Design Meets Wabi-Sabi
At LAYERS of Morocco, every rug begins with inspiration — not from a studio, but from the living rhythm of the Atlas Mountains.
The valley of Aït Bouguemaz, with its orchards, kasbahs, and sunlit fields, is our creative origin.
Each hour of the day, each season of the year, each chapter of life transforms the valley’s aura — and becomes part of our design language.
We believe in slow design: observing before acting, letting materials speak, allowing ideas to mature like the wool drying in mountain air.
And in every fiber lives the philosophy of wabi-sabi — beauty found in imperfection, impermanence, and authenticity.
Each irregular knot, each tonal variation, is intentional: a trace of time, a human rhythm, a quiet honesty.
The Language of Names
Each rug bears a name in Tamazight, the ancestral language of the Amazigh people — a language still spoken today by nearly one in three Moroccans, especially in the Atlas Mountains.
We chose to keep these names — Ighrem, Tifawin, Adrar, Tameghra — because language carries memory.
Tamazight is not a relic of the past; it is a living voice that continues to connect families, villages, and generations.
Through these words, we honor the people who still speak it daily — the weavers, shepherds, and storytellers who keep Morocco’s oldest tongue alive.
Naming each rug in Tamazight is a gesture of respect and continuity — a way of letting the land speak in its own language.
Three Paths of Design
Our creations unfold like journeys through Morocco’s landscapes — each collection is a path shaped by light, land, and memory.
TRADITIONAL PATH COLLECTION – The Paths of the Sun
ⴰⴱⵔⵉⴷ ⵏ ⵜⴰⴼⵓⴽⵜ (Abrid n Tafoukt)
This collection follows the daily movement of light across the valley.
From Ighrem (The Attic) and Ifil (Dawn) to Aghelluy (Sunset) and Tamayourt (Starry Night), each rug captures a moment of transition — between day and night, warmth and shadow, past and future.
The designs echo Traditional Amazigh codes: symbols of protection, fertility, and journey, translated into pure, expressive geometry.
Each piece celebrates the beauty of time — simple, irregular, alive.
MODERNE PATH COLLECTION – The Paths of Aït Bouguemaz
ⴱⵓⴳⴰⵎⴰⵣ (Abrid n Ait Bouguemez)
Here, heritage meets modernity.
Urti (The Orchards) and Tameghra (The Wedding) translate nature and celebrations into soft, organic compositions.
Pastel tones inspired by clay, sky, and spring replace strong contrasts, creating contemporary serenity.
These rugs are dialogues between tradition and design — timeless gestures, reimagined with modern balance.
BENI OUARAIN – Paths in the Mountains
ⴰⴱⵔⵉⴷ ⵏ ⴰⴷⵔⴰⵔ (Abrid n Adrar)
High in the Atlas, silence becomes form.
Adrar (The Mountains), Taqbilt (The Tribes), and Tizi (The Mountain Pass) express the strength and calm of high altitude.
Minimal, architectural, and deeply rooted in Amazigh weaving, these rugs honor purity and permanence.
They are meditations in wool — reflections of lineage, strength, and harmony.
Evolving Through Time — The Next Layers
Our philosophy doesn’t end with what already exists.
Each collection will grow with time, as new inspirations rise from the valley — new colors after the rain, new forms from the changing light.
Upcoming designs will explore fresh textures, henbel flat-weaves, and bolder compositions — always faithful to our principles of slow design, authenticity, and emotional connection.
Because inspiration is infinite.
Like the Atlas itself, it shifts with the seasons — but it never disappears.
